week 11 - Day 2 21/11/23

1. which key principles did you learn in the portfolio presentation?

During todays lecture we focused on the format of the art portfolios. We discussed the main elements which we need to contain, the placement and the amount of text we need to add. Additionally, we analyzed many examples, from students. Being able to observe a visual example is extremely helpful, since we get inspiration. The main principles which we discussed was to explain the process, provide evidence of research, inspiration, exploration, experimentation and then outcome. The key idea of the portfolio is to present the thinking process, how one idea influenced the other. Additionally, I was surprised on the amount of text we need to have, two or three sentences. That will be a challenging aspect for me, since I prefer to analyze and explain my work with words.

2. how successful was your initial attempt at making the test model?

I was focused on creating an wearable structure, which limited by imagination. I decided to create a paper model of the rib cage and play around with light. The scale was 1:50 and present it a large installation, were people would walk under and come together to protect themselves from the rain. I reflected on my model and I concluded it was to direct, the shape of the rib cage didn't have process. I experimented, by opening it and giving access to the audiences to walk on top of it. I continued, by experimenting with the scale, making the people bigger, able to squish themselves in the structure and lay. I found this concept fascinating, since the body would adapt and would take the form of the rib cage, in a circular motion. Lastly, I aimed to give them an easier access, by opening half of the rib cage. Based on that solution, people could sit easier under and on top of the installation.

3. what went well and what could you improve?

I personally believe that during todays lecture I was able to expand my ideas based on experimentation. Throughout the process I was very excited to try different possible forms and dimensions. The biggest obstacle which I faced was keeping the task connected with the outcome, since keeping the installation in contact with the body wasn't my priority. I decided to change the scale and make the rib cage, same height with the individual. That worked perfectly, since the person would adapt the body on the curve, creating a circular motion. During the lecture I was able to develop my problem solving, thinking, experimentation and creativity skills.

4. how has looking back at your work from last week changed the way you are thinking about your final proposal?

The way I pursued this concept has changed drastically throughput these two weeks. Initially, I aimed to create a structure which would hug the body, a clothing piece. I experimented with this idea and tried a large installation, where people would walk through. My final attempt focused on contacting the body and changing its form and shape.
